As part of Sarawak's target to achieve 10GW of energy capacity by 2030, the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak (MUT), in collaboration with Sarawak Energy, is assessing the potential of Cascading Power Sources (CPS) across 12 river basins in the state. Sungai Gaat in Kapit has been identified as one of the potential sites and selected as the pilot for a feasibility study under this initiative.
In observance of local customs, a Muja Menua ceremony – meaning "to bless the land" – was held at Rumah Kanyan ak Lawan, Nanga Ramong. This customary practice is carried out before any potential land or river activity is explored.
The event was attended by The Honourable Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong and The Honourable Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, along with other state assemblymen (Baleh and Pelagus), community leaders from the Gaat area, and representatives from both the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak and Sarawak Energy. The ceremony reflects the shared commitment to honouring local culture and engaging communities as part of Sarawak's sustainable energy development journey.
