KUCHING (April 24): Sarawak has recorded its best performance in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, achieving a State Average Grade (GPN) of 4.84 for 2024, said Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli.

This marks an improvement of 0.08 from the previous year’s GPN of 4.92. Under the national grading system, a lower GPN indicates better overall academic performance.

“Sarawak has shown improvements both in quality and performance. Our State Average Grade improved to 4.84 from 4.92 in 2023, one of the best performances yet.

“The percentage of qualified candidates also increased, from 93.15 per cent in 2023 to 9.411 per cent in 2024.

“This shows more candidates are eligible to receive their certificates, having at least passed BM and Sejarah,” he told a press conference on the SPM 2024 results and performance for Sarawak here today.

Among candidates from secondary schools registered under the Ministry of Education, 821 students scored straight A’s, an increase from 726 candidates in 2023.

Additionally, 6,052 candidates obtained at least a Grade C across all subjects, while 13,250 passed all subjects.

The remaining 10,508 candidates failed at least one subject.

Additionally, from the 127 candidates with disabilities who sat for the examination, 86 successfully graduated.

Despite the overall progress, Omar acknowledged a performance gap between urban and rural schools.

“The urban schools recorded an average GPN of 4.46 in 2024, compared to 4.54 in 2023.

“Meanwhile, rural schools improved from 5.18 to 5.11,” he said.

A total of 35,423 candidates registered for SPM 2024, which was held from Dec 2, 2024, to Feb 6, 2025.

From that figure, 800 candidates (2 per cent) were reported absent and did not sit for any examination papers, suggesting they had opted out prior to the exams.

“Reasons included working to support their families or health-related matters, but most chose to work.

“Schools have worked hard to ensure all candidates sat for the exams.

“Teachers visited students’ homes and workplaces, including offshore oil rigs, to persuade them to return to school and sit for the exams, a truly commendable effort,” Omar added.

SPM 2024 candidates can view their results at myresultspm.moe.gov.my or via SMS at 15888 by sending SPM followed by their MyKad number and SPM candidate number.
